Passagemaker University Adds ABYC
Boat Owner Course to Schedule

PassageMaker University (PMU) and the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) are teaming up to present "Electrical Basics For The Boat Owner" in Stuart, Florida and Anacortes, Washington. The two-day course is in conjunction with PassageMaker University, an education extension of PassageMaker Magazine's notable cruising-under-power event, Trawler Fest. PassageMaker University offers in-depth boating courses to cruisers of all levels, and could not be more pleased to combine resources with ABYC to offer this new electrical course.

The course will debut in Stuart, Florida, January 22 & 23, 2008 at the Hutchinson Island Marriott. The two-day program, presented by ABYC professionals, will cover the basics for any boat owner of how to perform simple repairs and how to handle troubleshooting and maintenance procedures. The course covers electricity fundamentals such as the relationship between volts, ohms, amps, and watts and how they interact. The course will cover how to properly terminate wire as well as some of the basic ABYC Standards as they apply to wire support and chafe protection. Once the fundamentals are set in place, students will learn how to use a multimeter, how to take electrical measurements for both low voltage DC and higher voltage AC systems, and what those measurements mean.

Electrical Basics For The Boat Owner will be offered again on May 20 & 21 at PassageMaker University in Anacortes, WA. The PassageMaker University platform provides an intimate setting and small student to teacher ratio. At the close of PMU, students can remain in Stuart or Anacortes for Trawler Fest, which offers more seminars, a trawler boat show and a rendezvous experience.

ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for over 50 years. ABYC is actively involved with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as well as education and certification programs for marine technicians. These standards are available on CD-ROM, online (Web-STIR and the ABYC Standards Powered by Rulefinder.net) and in printed form. Membership and general information can be requested by visiting the ABYC Web site at www.abycinc.org.
